Four sets of GES twins

Drivers at Grapevine Elementary this year might do a quick double take during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal. That’s because this year, the school’s safety patrol has four sets of twins—all who are in the fourth grade!

Twins Sean and Grant Hazard, Felipe and Evelyn Araujo, Sawyer and Korben Waag, and Jeremy and Joshua Holtzman make up the one-of-a-kind group.

P.E. coach Michelle Basil, who oversees Safety Patrol, says she’s never seen anything like it in her 15 years of teaching. “Although none of the four are identical, just the fact that we have many twins in our safety patrol, and they are all in the same grade, is pretty cool.”

Each morning and afternoon, the twins are part of the 40-student team who take shifts during the week to direct traffic, assist younger students out of cars and greet fellow schoolmates with a friendly smile and a welcoming “good morning.”

“They’re really responsible and develop good skills,” Basil said. “They learn to be in control of a situation and learn leadership skills, while keeping our school safe.”

Twin Felipe said the experience is “fun because I have never seen so many sets of twins in just one group.”

Meanwhile, teammate Sawyer recognized a larger purpose, sharing that “I get to open doors and help little kids out who are half my size, but what I really like is helping out.”
